Increased Safety Enclosures
Increased Safety (Ex e) is a type of protection that applies only to electrical apparatus that does not produce arcs or sparks in normal service.
Additional measures are applied so as to give increased security against the possibility of excessive temperatures and of the occurrence of arcs
and sparks. Issues such as electrical clearances and security of connections are addressed.
This is different from intrinsically safe which prevents any spark or thermal effect from igniting by limiting voltage and currents with electrical circuit components known as barriers.
Expo’s range of increased safety products are used for the protection of:
- electric motors (that do not have commutators or slip rings)
- terminal boxes
- heaters
- lamps
- luminaries
- batteries
The European Standard for Increased Safety is EN 60079-7. Equipment designed to this concept is suitable for use in 'Zone 1' and 'Zone 2' hazardous areas.
