Case Studies

Expo celebrates 50 years experience, providing solutions for the hazardous gas & dust and non-hazardous industries for safe installation of electrical equipment.

The following case studies represent a selection of special projects, which demonstrate our experience in a variety of applications:

Label printers for the Pharmaceutical Industry

Expo has developed a standard Barcode Label Printer for use in hazardous locations by the pharmaceutical industry. The Expo enclosure houses the print and is purged to remove any internal hazardous gas and pressurized to keep the gas away from the internal print. A “safe area” has been created.

The snag free self-feed label exits through the front and is easy to replace the label roll when required, all with the minimum of leakage.
Front panel printer controls are operated by Expo through window push buttons.

Several designs to accommodate different manufacturers prints have been produced, which ensures compatibility with the label specified and the host software. The purge system used is the MiniPurge leakage compensation which is ATEX, FM & cULus certified for Zone 1 or 2 or Class I, Div 1 or 2 locations. The complete assembly is ATEX certified.

Slip Rings for Offshore Sea Winches (ROV)

Expo has been supplying the offshore service industry for many years with a solution to protect not only the Slip Ring but also the electrical ‘J” boxes by purging the Separate enclosure in Series. This reduces the cost by simplifying the overall installation for the underwater “Remote-Operated Vehicle” industry. The purge system used is the MiniPurge continuous flow, which is ATEX, FM & cULus certified for Zone 1 or 2 or Class I,

Div 1 or 2 locations. The complete assembly is approved with an Expo ‘Manufacturer Declaration of Conformity’ certificate.

HV Electric Machines -50ºC (58ºF)

Expo has developed the MiniPurge D258 MotorPurge system, which is specifically designed for HV electric machines. For an application in Russia we were asked, could it operate at -50ºC? We then designed a heated housing for the control unit to provide a warm environment for the Expo MiniPurge D258 and obtain a variation to our ATEX certificate.

Small Electric Motors

Expo was recently asked if we could supply an ‘X’ Purge system that was small and could fit directly to a small electric motor. We were able to supply the Mini-X-Purge continuous flow system, which fulfilled all the requirements for this application. The application was for a Class I, Division 1 Group B, C & D.
